Mixing is the process of blending together all of the individual tracks in a recording to create a version of a song that sounds as good as possible. This is referred to as "the mix". It includes balancing the levels of all of the tracks, adjusting the sound of each track by using equalization (EQ), "panning" the tracks between speakers to create a stereo image and adding reverb, compresion, and other effects to enhance the original recording.
Mastering is the stage after mixing, which is the process of turning the song(s) into a final master for manufacturing so that it translates well across all mediums (CD, MP3 player, radio, computer, car, phone, etc.). Some of the process includes balancing the overall level and tonal balance of songs, EQ, controlling dynamic range, M/S processing and limiting, and creating a reliable master for release and distribution.
